The liberalization of the Indian economy facilitated significant changes in the eating habits of urban middle-class Indians since the 1990s. There have been several studies on the impact of restaurants and practices of eating out after liberalisation in India. But the relationship between food and emerging technological forms, particularly digital ones, remains under-researched. The talk may examine the impact of online food delivery service providers, especially in the context of combined effects of demonetization and related push towards digitalization, on the food habits of urban middle-class youth in India. The digitalization of food is a productive site to explore how new ideas of social life itself are constructed. There is a growing intersection between food habits and digital modes, particularly in urban India and has larger implications on ideas of caste, class, gender, labour and livelihood.
